Nizo Yamamoto: Master of Animation Art

Matsuzakaya Art Museum
Finished
Nizo Yamamoto, who served as the art director for "Castle in the Sky" (1986), "Grave of the Fireflies" (1988), and "Princess Mononoke" (1997) was born in the Goto Islands of Nagasaki. In 1978, at the age of 24, he was selected as the art director for "Future Boy Conan." From then on, with precise composition and intricate detailing, he supported directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, lifting Japanese animation to become a culture acclaimed worldwide.

Yamamoto's talent also captivated young film directors that followed, as seen in the memorable background art he created for Mamoru Hosoda's "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" (2006) and Makoto Shinkai's "Weathering with You" (2019). On August 19, 2023, he passed away at the age of 70 due to stomach cancer. Until a few days before his death, he continued drawing a manga adaptation of the Goto Islands' folktale "Kanjigajiro," completing about 120 pages of sketches, leaving only one page unfinished.

This exhibition delves into Nizo Yamamoto's world of background art, showcasing 226 items, including hand-drawn background art from his early works to the latest, as well as unpublished art settings, image boards, and production tools created during the filmmaking process.
