Hamamatsu Municipal Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Nizo Yamamoto
Castle in the Sky" (1986), "Grave of the Fireflies" (1988), and "Princess Mononoke" (1997), Nizo Yamamoto has worked as art director for some of the most well-known national animated films

In 1978, at the age of just 24, Yamamoto was selected as art director for "Conan: Future Boy" and since then has supported directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata with his solid screen composition and meticulous attention to detail, propelling Japanese animation into a world-class culture. His talent also attracted young filmmakers who followed in his footsteps, directing famous scenes in Mamoru Hosoda's "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" (2006) and Makoto Shinkai's “Weathering with You" (2019).

This exhibition introduces approximately 230 pieces of Yamamoto's background art, including hand-drawn backgrounds from his early years to his latest works, as well as never-before-seen art settings, image boards, and production tools created during the production process, and a new work, "Cherry Blossom Dancing Hamamatsu Castle," on view for the first time at this exhibition.
