Living Modernity: Experiments in the Exceptional and Everyday 1920s–1970s

The National Art Center, Tokyo
Starts 3/19
Beginning in the 1920s, many architects including Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe have explored new residential designs with functionality and comfort in mind. Their experimental visions and innovative ideas eventually wove into everyday life, greatly reshaping people’s lifestyles.
This exhibition will focus on the seven characteristics of modern houses: hygiene, materials, windows, kitchen, furnishings, media, and landscape. Approximately 15 masterworks of residential architecture worldwide will be analyzed in-depth through photographs and drawings, sketches, models, furniture, textiles, tableware, magazines, graphics, and films.
The modernity of residential architecture that will be presented in this exhibition continues to resonate today, proving a chance to reflect on our living spaces and way of living.
