Seiichi Horiuchi
Seiichi Horiuchi (1932-87) was a legendary art director, designer, and picture book author active in the Showa era. While being a progressive art director who created logos for magazines such as "anan,” "Brutus," and "Popeye," he also developed a wide variety of creative activities as a popular picture book author, including the "Kurouma Blankey," "Gurumpa no Yochien," and "Tarou" series. From 1974, he moved to Paris, where he visited various parts of the world and wrote illustrations and essays, sending letters with his drawings to his friends, introducing the charm of travel.

This retrospective exhibition introduces Horiuchi's entire career as an illustrator, starting with his paintings from his childhood and continuing through his work for magazines and books, where he displayed his abundant talent as an art director and designer, as well as his picture books, which were his most special work. The exhibition also includes a special feature at the Oita venue, a look at Horiuchi's interaction with the Oita-born Western-style painter Kei Sato (1906-78) during his Parisian period.
