Artists

Seiichi Horiuchi
Born in Tokyo in 1932, Seiichi Horiuchi studied as a designer from a young age and became one of the leading art directors of his time. He developed a diverse range of work, including logos for well-known magazines such as "Anan," "Brutus," "Olive," and "Many Wonders," as well as book bindings and poster designs. In 1958, he published his first picture book, "Kuro Uma Blankie". He continued to produce many popular picture books, including "Gurumpa no Yochien," "Tarou no Odekake," "Kosuzume no Boken," and many others. As Horiuchi said, "The path of a picture book artist is the one that fate has decided for me." His 54 years of life were spent drawing pictures.

This exhibition will be held to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Horiuchi's birth in 2022 and will be a retrospective of his entire artistic career. In the turbulent postwar period, Horiuchi demonstrated the power of the visual medium of "pictures" in a variety of fields, including advertising, design, and illustration. The world of Horiuchi's work shows how the culture of picture books and magazines has changed and developed over the course of the 20th century.
