Shu Ogasawara
Influenced by manga from a young age, Shu Ogasawara studied sculpture at the former Kyoto University of Art and Design and has engaged with sculpture since graduating. In addition to his creations and exhibitions, he founded the collaborative studio Yamanaka Suplex in 2014, aimed at creating three-dimensional works. His accolades include the Taro Igarashi Award at the "Genbi Doko Demo Proposal Exhibition 2018," the Amagasaki City Cultural Future Encouragement Award (2018), and he has taken on independent projects reconsidering sculpture itself, such as "Symbolizing the Issue - Sculpture, Body, Masculinity" (2023) and "For You///" (2024), in collaboration with Takuya Kumagai and Yuto Yonemura. These endeavors have broadened his range of activities even further.

This exhibition, taking into account Ogasawara's diverse approach to sculpture, will feature large relief sculptures, each weighing over 100kg. The renewed focus on the relief form, previously explored in works like "Pieta" (2022) and "Couple" (2022), continues to advance the concept of "representing the unnecessary" and "sculpture as the useless," as noted by critic Machiko Chiba. The subjects of these works are Ogasawara's friends, and fellow artists born in 1985 (like himself) with connections to Kyoto, captured through smartphone photography.
