Takeshi Sumi
Photographs portray existence that “once was, was there”. This is why Sumi is so obsessed with photography. Ever since he was a child, Sumi has believed that “it is meaningful to depend on the visible world and to find the image beyond the retina's grasp,” and while he is dedicated to photographs that capture reality, he also aims to embody a new form of beauty in his work. The title of this exhibition, “Les fantasies,” is a French word that can be translated as “Illusions. It symbolizes the act of giving form, color, and beauty to the illusions found in the uncertain and ambiguous realm between reality and imagination, and between the individual and the world. He embroiders directly on the paper on which the photograph is printed. The threads are guided by his fingers, and while taking on a variety of colors, they create a presence that could not be captured in the photograph, connecting with the subject. The presence of the thread, an illusion/unreal, starts up three dimensions on the flat paper and becomes a node that connects the audience's world with the illusion.
