Hiroshi Kagakui
The "Daruma-san" series of picture books, is widely beloved by children with a cumulative circulation exceeding 9 million copies. The author, Hiroshi Kagakui (1955-2009), was a teacher at a special needs school. Making his debut as a writer at the age of 50, he produced a series of exquisite picture books within a mere four years before his sudden passing due to illness.

The "Hiroshi Kagakui picture books," which evoke lively reactions and laughter from children, were born from insights and experiences cultivated in the field of special needs education.

This exhibition, the first major retrospective after Kagakui's passing, traces his footsteps through original picture book illustrations, production materials, and precious video recordings from his time as a teacher. It aims to delve into the charm of Kagakui's picture books, which continue to bring smiles to children all over Japan even at this moment.
