Artists

Hiroshi Kagakui
Hiroshi Kagakui (1955-2009) transitioned into a picture book author at 50 following 28 years of teaching at special-needs schools. In just four years, Kagakui created a series of beloved works, notably the "Daruma-san" series, which sold over 9 million copies and enchanted children with its heartfelt storytelling. Drawing on experiences with children with disabilities, Kagakui's picture books are cherished for their natural appeal to young readers. This exhibition marks the first major retrospective of Kagakui's work in over four years. Commemorating the 15th anniversary of the artist's passing, the exhibition will be held in a special venue within the annex building, showcasing original picture book drawings, production materials, video footage from Kagakui's teaching days, handmade teaching materials, and other materials that highlight Kagakui's multifaceted appeal.
