If you strain your eyes, you will see – you will see a quiet world spread out there.

HAMAGUCHI Yozo (1909-2000) is one of the leading copperplate artists of the 20th century. Around 1950, he began to pursue copperplate printing in earnest and pioneered a new technique called color mezzotint. His deep blacks and delicate colors are created by printing plate after plate, expanding the world within the picture infinitely. Fruits and insects gently emerge in the darkness. The outlines are soft, and a quiet presence dwells in the silence. This exhibition will feature about 50 copperplate prints by HAMAGUCHI Yozo, including “Grapes on a Dark Background.

In a small section, six small drypoint prints recently discovered will be exhibited for the first time, along with reproductions of the prints. These are experimental prints of unknown production date. We hope you will appreciate a different side of HAMAGUCHI Yozo from mezzotint.
