Yumeji Takehisa
Yumeji Takehisa, a painter and poet symbolizing the "Taisho Romanticism" era, was born in 1884 (Meiji 17) in Okayama Prefecture. Despite never receiving formal art education, Takehisa established his unique style through self-study and gained popularity with his lyrical portraits of beautiful women, known as the "Yumeji style."

As a pioneer in graphic design, Takehisa worked on book and magazine covers, as well as designs for clothing and miscellaneous goods, constantly pursuing beauty in everyday life.

Even 90 years after his death, Takehisa's work captivates many people.

This exhibition commemorates the 140th anniversary of Takehisa's birth and traces his life from a new perspective based on the latest research. It features approximately 180 works, including the newly discovered masterpiece "Amaryllis" from the mid-Taisho period, the rare oil painting "Nude on the West Coast" created during his stay in the United States, and sketches and drawings left to a friend who cared for him in his final days. These are primarily from the Yumeji Art Museum collection and include materials being exhibited for the first time.
