Satoshi Kawata "Techne for the Public"

Kyoto City Kyocera Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Satoshi Kawata
Satoshi Kawata draws from elements that characterize the homogenized landscapes of cities and suburbia. Painted using plaster and pigments, images from the suburbs of cities such as plants and billboards are fragmented and reconstituted, sometimes on a scale that envelops the viewer and the entire exhibition space. In recent years, Kawata has also been working with strappo, a technique used for removing fresco from a wall and transferring it to a canvas or other support. A mural forms a strong relationship with the site where it was created, but Kawata employs this technique as a means to temporarily reconstruct the memories contained in the wall surface and architecture at a different space or site.

In this exhibition, Kawata will present new works researched with "suburbia" and "tourism" as clues.
