Sakamoto Hanjiro and France

Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, Tokyo
Until Jan 26

Artists

Hanjiro Sakamoto et al.
This exhibition introduces the work of Sakamoto Hanjiro (1882-1969), a Western-style painter who was active from the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods, while focusing on his relationship with France. In addition to Sakamoto's works, the exhibition features 15 pieces by Corot, Millet, Cezanne, and others who also studied in France, including Fujishima Takeji, Okada Saburosuke, and Mitsutani Kunishiro.
Sakamoto was born in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture in 1882 (Meiji 15), and at the age of 20, he followed his schoolmate Aoki Shigeru to Tokyo and studied at Koyama Shotaro's Fudosha. In 1921 (Taisho 10), he traveled to Europe to study in Paris, where he studied under Charles Guerin for about six months, and then produced works in various parts of France, including Brittany. After returning to Japan in 1924 (Taisho 13), he did not return to Tokyo, but instead based himself in his hometown of Yame, where he continued to produce works until his death.
This exhibition will shed light on what Sakamoto gained from his studies in France and how this changed in his later works.
