From Edo to Tokyo - Seen in Ukiyo-e and Modern Prints

Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, Tokyo
Until May 11
The Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum,Tokyo's collection of ukiyo-e and shinhanga from the late Edo period to the Showa period was collected by Mitsubishi Estate as a reference material. These works do not cover a wide range of subjects, but rather focus on a specific area: the transformation of the landscape around Marunouchi in the modern era. As the Edo Shogunate was replaced by the Meiji government, the surrounding area, including Edo Castle, which was the Shogunate's residence, underwent major changes. Marunouchi was home to government offices and a military parade ground, which was then sold to Mitsubishi. Places such as Kasumigaseki, Hibiya, and Ginza also underwent change in the wake of the Meiji Restoration. We hope that you will enjoy strolling through the city and experiencing the transformation of the city in the modern era while looking at the prints that reflect these aspects.
