Artists

Naoko Machida
Painter and picture book artist Naoko Machida expresses the living space of the text through delicate touches and bold compositions in her picture books, earning high praise. In Machida's picture books, one can often find the presence of cats.

Machida's motto is "If there's a gap, there's a cat." In various stories such as fairy tales, Tōno Monogatari, and ghost story picture books, she portrays cats as protagonists or sometimes as supporting characters. The depicted cats are meticulously expressed, from their fur to their gestures, showcasing Machida's keen observation of cats and her affectionate gaze toward them.

This exhibition introduces approximately 270 pieces, including original picture book illustrations, paintings, rough sketches, and other valuable production materials from 17 picture books, from Machida's debut work to her representative works such as "Nezume no Yoru," "Namae no Nai Neko," "Neko Harusuban," as well as her latest work, "Dosukoi Miichan Pan-ya-san."
