I Dream Cats Could Be Us

The Museum of Kyoto
Finished

Artists

Kuniyoshi Utagawa et al.
To liken something other than humans to humans is called anthropomorphism. Around 1841, ukiyo-e artist Kuniyoshi Utagawa began to produce a series of works in which he anthropomorphized cats and actors as cats.

This exhibition focuses on anthropomorphic cat paintings and Utagawa and on the fascination of anthropomorphic expression in the Edo period. In the process, this exhibition will explore why people are so drawn to Utagawa's works and what their appeal lies in.
