The Bologna Children's Book Fair, the world's only international fair dedicated exclusively to children's books, was established in Bologna, Northern Italy, in 1964. Each year, this fair hosts a competition for original illustrations, attracting numerous illustrators from around the globe. The open call requires participants to submit a set of five illustrations, and both published and unpublished works are judged impartially by experts in children's books. Many artists take their first steps as creators through this competition, which has long been a gateway for aspiring picture book authors.
Since 1978, the museum has held the annual "Bologna International Picture Book Exhibition" to showcase the selected works from this competition. This year, there were 3,520 submissions from 81 countries and regions, with 78 artists from 32 countries and regions, including four Japanese artists, making it to the selection. The exhibition will present all the selected works. In addition to the selected pieces, the exhibition will also feature a special display of works by Andrea Antinori, the winner of the SM Publishing Award (2023/13th edition).
