Artists

Edward Gorey
Edward Gorey (1925-2000), a picture book author with a mysterious worldview and intricate monochrome line drawings, has garnered a devoted fan base worldwide. In recent years, his works such as "The Doubtful Guest" and "The Hapless Child" have been introduced in Japan. Gorey displayed his multifaceted talents not only in his primary books, for which he provided both text and illustrations, but also in illustrations, stage and costume designs, and posters for theater and ballet.

This exhibition will reconfigure around 250 works and materials based on themes such as "Children," "Mysterious Creatures," and "Performing Arts" from the special exhibitions held at the Gorey House, the memorial museum in the author's final residence. Visitors can enjoy an encounter with Gorey's enigmatic works, which carry a profound and cool perspective on life and death as if traveling to the old mansion on the East Coast of the United States.

The exhibition is part of a nationwide tour in Japan that began last year at the Shoto Museum of Art in Shibuya and will be held for the first time in the Kansai region. Additionally, our museum will host a related exhibition titled "Edward Gorey and Japanese Culture - 20th Century American View."
