The Edo period, a time of flourishing culture, saw significant changes in people's lives over its approximately 260-year span of peace. While official court painters supported by the samurai class were active in the art world, the prosperous townspeople's society saw the emergence of vibrant new expressions. Both the samurai and commoner societies nurtured a rich variety of cultural development.

This exhibition will present 100 works from the collection of the Tekisuiken Memorial Cultural Promotion Foundation in Kashiwa City, Chiba Prefecture. The Tekisuiken Collection, originating from the private school and cultural salon "Tekisuiken" established in the old Kashiwa Village along the Mito Road, includes works by notable figures such as Shuki Okamoto, Moronobu Hishikawa, Harunobu Suzuki, Utamaro Kitagawa, Hiroshige Utagawa, Hokusai Katsushika, and Jakuchu Ito.

This is the first opportunity to view this valuable collection outside the metropolitan area. Enjoy the masterpieces of Edo-period ukiyo-e from its beginnings to its golden age, including a diverse array of expressions such as flower-and-bird paintings by these remarkable artists.
