The Beauty of Shunga - Hokusai and Utamaro: Exchange and Competition

Hosomi Museum
Until Nov 24
Shunga or erotic ukiyo-e prints, depict human sexuality with a broad and sometimes humorous approach. During the Edo period, they were also known as "laughing pictures" and were enjoyed by people of all social classes, from samurai to commoners, with gender equality.

This exhibition will focus particularly on "hand-drawn shunga," a rare and unique form of these works, highlighting pieces that, despite being known from books and other publications, have not been exhibited in museums before. Among these, Hokusai Katsushika's elusive masterpiece "Hand-drawn Wave Chidori" has not been publicly shown since its exhibition in Paris in 1976 and will be displayed for the first time in a Japanese museum.

Experience approximately 70 carefully selected and beautifully crafted shunga prints, including large works by Kitagawa Utamaro that defy the conventional notion of shunga as private pleasure, and about 20 pieces that have returned from abroad.

[First Period] September 7 (Saturday) - October 14 (Monday, Holiday)
