Animals in Ukiyo-e Exhibition

Yorozu Tetsugoro Museum
Finished
The ukiyo-e prints popular during the Edo period feature many animals interacting with people. From cats, dogs, and goldfish beloved as pets, to horses, cows, and monkeys working alongside humans, and even exotic creatures like elephants, peacocks, parrots, and mythical beasts, they are depicted in various forms. The artists did not merely capture these adorable, comical, or mysterious animals as they were, but also used them to satirize society or humorously convey incidents, showcasing their imagination. Through these ukiyo-e prints from the mid-Edo to early Meiji periods, visitors can glimpse the social atmosphere of the time while enjoying the depictions of animals created by popular artists such as Harunobu, Utamaro, Hokusai, Hiroshige, and Kuniyoshi.
