Theater, Dance, Music - Enjoy the Edo Performing Arts with Hokusai

The Sumida Hokusai Museum
Finished

Artists

Hokusai Katsushika
Approximately 50 years before presenting his representative work "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji" series, at the age of 19, Hokusai Katsushika apprenticed under Shunsho Katsukawa and began his career as a ukiyo-e artist. The ukiyo-e prints depicting kabuki actors that he created at the beginning of his career are rare and precious works, with only a small number remaining. Additionally, Hokusai worked on various printed materials created as invitations to entertainment events, but there are not many works where both the image and textual information have been preserved in complete form. In addition, there are works depicting various dances related to entertainment. From unique dances such as sparrow dancing and villainous dancing, one can glimpse Hokusai's skillful brushwork in capturing the movement of the human body. Many works that are being exhibited for the first time at this museum will be on display.
