Hokusai and the Producers: From Tsutaya Jūzaburō to Today

The Sumida Hokusai Museum
Starts in 3 days
Ukiyo-e, as a commercial publication, cannot be made by painters alone. It also requires a publisher who handles everything from planning to sales, and an engraver and a printer who engraves and prints the woodblocks. Especially, the publisher, who was responsible for identifying trends, planning to boost sales, and everything from hiring artists to directing the engravers and printers, was an important figure who was like a general producer of ukiyo-e artists. This exhibition traces how these publishers produced Hokusai and what kind of works they produced. The exhibition will introduce Edo publishers such as Tsutaya Jūzaburō, who was known as the media king of Edo and had his eye on Hokusai's talent from early on, Nishimuraya Yohachi, who made "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" a real hit, and Eirakuya Tōshirō, who published "Sketches by Hokusai", as traditional woodblock prints, contemporary artists inspired by ukiyo-e production, and works by Hokusai. Enjoy the world of producers who support the ukiyo-e industry from Tsutaya Jūzaburō in the Edo period to today.
