The Beloved Gods and Buddhas of Northeastern Japan

Ryukoku Museum
Finished
During the Edo period (1603-1867), temples throughout Japan enshrined splendid golden Buddha images made in Kamigata (Kyoto) and Edo (now Tokyo) as their principal images. On the other hand, in small halls, shrines, and private homes, simple and unique Buddhist statues and Shinto statues made by local carpenters and monks were enshrined and carefully protected by the people. This exhibition introduces approximately 130 Buddhist and Shinto statues from Aomori, Iwate, and Akita prefectures.
