Tessai Tomioka
Tessai Tomioka, often referred to as the last literati painter, was born in Kyoto in 1836. The term literati refers to individuals proficient in scholarship and skilled in poetry, prose, and painting. Literati painting (Nanga) refers to paintings and calligraphy created by literati as a side pursuit. Tomioka, who pursued both scholarship and painting through self-study, left behind numerous innovative works until his passing at the age of 89 in 1924. This year marks the centenary of Tomioka's passing.

In 1909, Tomioka submitted his work "Kyokkei Landscape" to the "Modern Famous Artists Exhibition" held at Takashimaya stores in Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo. This marked a significant turning point as Tomioka, who was somewhat apart from the art world at the time, became widely recognized. Two years later, Takashimaya established its art department and held Tomioka's first solo exhibition in 1913. These exhibitions, organized by Takashimaya's art department, showcased new works where Tomioka freely wielded his brush, leading to his popularity spreading nationwide. In his later years, his solo exhibitions were exclusively held at Takashimaya, and commemorative art collections were also produced, solidifying his reputation as "Tessai of Takashimaya" in society.

Tessai's works associated with Takashimaya are preserved in the Takashimaya Historical Museum. 'Presenting You One Hundred Fans' consists of 100 fans that Tomioka continued to present to his friends over many years. These fans feature landscapes, flora and fauna, figures, and more, painted as Tomioka whimsically enjoyed. This exhibition will display all one hundred fans, each containing a story painted by the master Tessai Tomioka.
