Tessai Tomioka (1836-1924), a scholar navigating Japan's Westernization while cherishing Eastern culture, was known as the "last literati." A pioneer in painting, blending bold brushwork with delicate colors, Tomioka's masterpieces in the Idemitsu Collection highlight Tomioka's unique and enduring appeal as the centennial of the artist's passing is celebrated this year.
