Born in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Tamako Kataoka (1905-2008) graduated from the Japanese Painting Department of the Women's Art College in 1926 and continued to create works while working at the Ooka Elementary School in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. In 1955, she retired from elementary school to teach Japanese painting at Joshibi University of Art and Design, her alma mater, and in 1966, when Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music opened, she became the chief professor of Japanese painting at the school.
