Tamako Kataoka
This is the first exhibition to focus on the "Tsurugamae" series of portraits of historical figures by Japanese painter Tamako Kataoka (1905-2008).

Kataoka was born in Sapporo and graduated from Women's Art College (now Joshibi University of Art and Design). In 1989, she was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit and lived to be 103 years old. With her intense colors, powerful brushwork, and bold forms, she created a unique style of expression unrivaled in the postwar world of Japanese painting.

Kataoka's “Tsuragamae" series began in 1966, when he was 61, with a portrait of Shogun Ashikaga, and continued for 38 years until he was 99, representing the latter half of her life. The faces of warlords, Buddhist monks, and ukiyo-e artists are all depicted with Kataoka's broad, free-spirited sensibility in the modern age. This exhibition will explore the essence of Kataoka's art through approximately 40 works, including large paintings that were exhibited at the Saiko Inten Exhibition and small preparatory sketches that reveal the creative process of the series.
