Opening for a new solo photo exhibition ‘Cocoon’ will take place at MIDORI.so GALLERY in its BAKUROYOKOYAMA location on Friday November 22 2024, 6-9pm.

As a second-generation Chinese-Australian, photographer Sherry Zheng seeks to explore vulnerability and the journey of identifying the self in a space that one may or may not call home, through Cocoon her solo photo exhibition. Documenting environmental portraits of individuals identifying with the Asian diaspora living in cities ranging from Sydney/Melbourne, Tokyo, and New York, Cocoon is a survey of the internal and the private spaces that these individuals have carved out for themselves.
The exhibition highlights analogue photographic practices featuring three mural-sized darkroom colour handprints, each spanning almost two meters in length, accompanied by nine smaller colour handprints.
Utilising the medium of photography, Sherry explores the intertwined feelings of vulnerability and voyeurism in the gallery space. The space in which holds these prints will feature another installation piece, utilising the artist’s own archival family photographs, reprinted onto a vinyl tablecloth.
All prints are made in the artist’s hometown of Sydney - darkroom prints by sandyprints and vinyl printing by Base White Fine Art Printing Services.

The exhibition will run for two weeks, closing Sunday December 8th. A panel discussion will take place on Saturday November 30th, where the artist and two collaborators Misaki Hata and Carina Fushimi (who are depicted in the exhibited artworks) will be present and discuss the project. There they will delve into their unique perspectives on the diasporic asian identity in Japan and abroad.
