Artists

Shuji Terayama
Shuji Terayama (1935–1983) explored the rich potential of expressive activities by crossing various artistic fields, fully demonstrating his talent. Even today, his fan base continues to grow, including among younger generations, through the re-staging of his plays and the screening of his films. In recent years, his work has been included in textbooks, allowing them to resonate with the sensitive minds of adolescents across generations. The universality of Terayama's works continues to attract new readers.

At the age of 18, Terayama won the Tanka Kenkyu Newcomer Award. Afterward, he shifted the foundation of his creative activities from traditional forms like haiku and tanka to free verse and expanded his range to include songwriting and radio poetry (broadcast poetry). In the late 1960s, around the age of 30, Terayama moved to Shimouma, Setagaya, where he established the Experimental Theater Troupe Tenjo Sajiki. This period, known as the Setagaya era, marked a turning point in Terayama's life as he transitioned into new artistic fields, including theater and film, while also engaging in writing activities such as novels, plays, and essays.

In commemoration of the 90th anniversary of Terayama's birth, this exhibition will present a collection of related materials that have been housed in the museum. Through approximately 150 items, including handwritten letters and materials related to Tenjo Sajiki (manuscripts, scripts, posters), the exhibition will provide an introduction to the life and activities of Shuji Terayama.
