Pioneers of Style Chanel, Schiaparelli and Dior From the Chisako Kotaki Collection

Panasonic Shiodome Museum of Art

Costume jewelry was pioneered by Paul Poiret and popularized by Chanel in the early 20th century. Free from the preconceptions of materials such as gemstones and precious metals, costume jewelry became an indispensable element of the Parisian fashion world and eventually spread to the United States, thanks to its superior design and attractiveness when combined with clothing.

This is the first exhibition in Japan to comprehensively introduce the development of costume jewelry. The exhibition includes not only pieces created for haute couture collections by Dior and Schiaparelli, but also exquisite necklaces and brooches made by jewelry workshops commissioned by those brands, as well as original pieces by Leanne Vautrin, Coppola e Toppo, and others. American costume jewelry, represented by Miriam Haskell and Trifari, was favored by a wide range of people.

This exhibition introduces over 400 examples of these pieces selected from the best collections in Japan and explores the stylistic beauty that each designer has created through the freedom of materials.
