At the beginning of the 20th century, Paul Poiret pioneered costume jewelry, which was widely popularized by Chanel. Freed from the conventional notions of materials like gemstones and precious metals, this jewelry took the Paris fashion world by storm with its excellent design and the appeal of being combined with clothing, eventually spreading to America. This exhibition is Japan's first comprehensive display of the development of costume jewelry.
The exhibition includes not only pieces created for haute couture collections by Dior and Schiaparelli but also intricate necklaces and brooches by jewelry workshops, unique masterpieces by designers such as Line Vautrin and Coppola e Toppo, and American costume jewelry widely supported by the masses, represented by Miriam Haskell and Trifari. Selected from the premier collection in Japan, over 400 examples will be showcased, exploring the distinctive aesthetic styles each designer achieved through the freedom of materials.
