Lee Ufan
Since its opening in 1994, Museum Haus Kasuya has introduced modern art works from Japan and abroad through special exhibitions and permanent exhibitions. On this 30th anniversary year, we have been organizing exhibitions throughout the year featuring important artists who are closely related to the museum. The present exhibition presents works of Lee Ufan, who has been drawing worldwide attention as a representative artist of the Mono-ha, or the School of Things, based on philosophical thoughts.

Lee Ufan has been highly acclaimed internationally for many years, and his solo exhibitions have been held at the Guggenheim Museum (2011), the Palace of Versailles (2014), the Centre Pompidou-Metz (2019), the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum of Contemporary Art (Germany), and the Art Gallery of New South Wales (Australia). In Japan as well, a retrospective exhibition, which comprehensively looks back on over 50 years of his activities, was held at the National Art Center, Tokyo and the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art in 2022, leading to re-evaluation of the artist.

As represented by the title “Playful Creation in In-between Time”, this exhibition features a variety of playful exhibits that are not presented at regular exhibitions. During his busy days in his ateliers in Japan and France preparing for large-scale exhibitions worldwide, he used his free time to create these works in a spontaneous way.

The museum has had a permanent collection of Lee Ufan’s works since the opening of an exhibition room dedicated to the artist in 2009, but this is the first time we hold his solo exhibition. In conjunction with this exhibition, new three-dimensional works are added to the permanent collection.
