Lautrec and the Paris of the Belle Époque - 1900

Takaoka Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec et al.
The 1900 Paris World Exposition was held as a major event that brought together the pinnacle of civilization and culture, exerting significant influence both domestically and internationally. As a hedonistic atmosphere filled the city, new art scenes such as Symbolism and Art Nouveau emerged from the fin de siècle art movements, heralding the arrival of the "Belle Époque" or "beautiful era."

This exhibition focuses on the artistic expressions born from this era, where posters, once a genre of popular culture, were elevated to the realm of art, significantly influencing future generations. It highlights artists of the time such as Toulouse-Lautrec, Mucha, and Degas, known for their bold compositions and innovative sensibilities. The exhibition showcases approximately 300 works including prints, oil paintings, watercolors, and drawings, depicting theaters, pleasure districts, women's fashion, and daily life through artworks, advertisements, and publications.

Additionally, the exhibition will introduce the achievements of Tadamasa Hayashi, an art dealer who served as the Japanese commissioner at the 1900 Paris World Exposition.

This exhibition marks the second part of the 30th anniversary celebration of the opening of the Takaoka City Museum of Art.
