Katsuhito Nishikawa
Over 40 years, Germany-based Katsuhito Nishikawa (1949– ), has been creating works that pay attention to light and darkness and the vague shadows in between, using a variety of techniques. His white sculptures, which possess abstract forms, are made from simple structures using wood and plaster. They quietly embody subtle shadows on their surfaces, seemingly absorbing the surrounding light and even sound. They neither loudly assert their existence nor boldly display their individuality. This subtle charm remains unchanged in his works, whether they are sculptures, photographs, or paintings.
This exhibition is the first retrospective in Japan that seeks to approach the aesthetics of Nishikawa's works, which have consistently maintained a characteristic stillness from the 1980s to the present. About 60 pieces, including sculptures, photographs, paintings, drawings, installations, and architectural structures, will be displayed in a composition arranged by the artist himself. This exhibition, set in the secluded environment of an art museum, is designed to allow each visitor to indulge in contemplation.

今年で閉園してしまう前に川村記念美術館へ。目的はロスコルームだったけど、こちらの企画展も良かった。雲の絵と白い不思議な彫刻の展示が自分を異世界にいるかとような気持ちにしてくれた。
