Yoshikuni Iida
Sculptor Yoshikuni Iida (1923-2006) is known for his three-dimensional artworks that combine colorful ropes with stainless steel, as well as monumental stainless steel works that reflect the surrounding landscapes. He began his career as a painter but transitioned to sculpture after studying under the sculptor Pericle Fazzini (1913-1987) in Rome during his visit to Europe in 1956. Iida later worked primarily in Vienna and Berlin, where he presented sculptures using wood and stone as materials. Upon returning to Japan in 1967, Iida chose metal as a central material for his creations and began crafting works that skillfully utilized the mirrored surfaces of stainless steel. He incorporated avant-garde ideas of sculptures moved by the wind and created his unique world by combining stainless steel sculptures with ropes in various colors.

In this exhibition, archival materials related to the "International Iron Sculpture Symposium" of 1969, in which Iida served as a producer, will be displayed. At this symposium, artists from various countries were invited to create works using iron, a material symbolizing modernity, with the assistance of ironworks. These works not only symbolized the forefront of civilization but also contained criticisms of it. Moreover, they left a significant mark on the development of post-war contemporary art, as they were installed at the venue of the World Exposition held in Osaka the following year. The exhibition will reflect on the atmosphere of Iida and other artists at the time, primarily through photographs.

Additionally, sculptures such as "Landscape of Time," which Iida created for the iron and steel symposium—inspiring the title of this exhibition—known as "Mirror Mobiles" by Iida himself, were later installed in various locations across Japan. Works such as "Petals of Knowledge" (1981) and "Signal to the Stars" (1984) remain at the Keio University Mita Campus. We hope that in encountering the flow of time reflected in works from different eras, overlapping with the time that Iida spent on the campus during his student days, visitors can discover a new landscape where they can encounter Yoshikuni Iida.
