Yoshikuni Iida
Introducing the world of printmaking by sculptor Yoshikuni Iida (1923-2006) and the charm of his outdoor sculpture "Sculpture Fountain Seesaw" installed in Serigaya Park.

Sculptor Yoshikuni Iida (1923-2006) took on the challenge of new expressions, such as sculptures combining stainless steel and rope and movable outdoor monuments like the "Mirror Mobile." For those familiar with Serigaya Park, where our museum is located, they may associate him with the "Rainbow and Water Plaza," a children's bathing area in the park, featuring the "Sculpture Fountain Seesaw" (1989).

After being demobilized in 1946, Iida aspired to be an artist and studied oil painting at Keio University and later at Tokyo University of the Arts. He turned to sculpture after studying in Europe in 1956 and established his unique world with stainless steel and steel sculptures reflecting the surrounding environment from the late 1960s. From the 1970s onwards, he worked on public sculptures in Japan and abroad, showcasing his literary talent and excelling in various fields.

This exhibition will showcase approximately 30 printmaking works by Iida, including copperplate prints he worked on during his study in Vienna in 1958-59, as well as collaborations with poet Junzaburo Nishiwaki, such as "Chromatopoema" (1972) and "Unchanging Words" (1994). Additionally, the exhibition will focus on the "Sculpture Fountain Seesaw," introducing Iida's drawings during the conceptualization phase, engineering innovations during installation, and the progress of last year's renovation work. Through this work, which is one of the largest outdoor monuments Iida created that still moves actively, the exhibition will delve into the secrets of "moving sculpture."
