Giorgio de Chirico "Metaphysical Journey"

Kobe City Museum
Until Dec 8

Artists

Giorgio De Chirico
Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978) was born to Italian parents in Greece. From around 1910, he began painting scenes of squares and interiors with concise and clear compositions. However, he distorted perspective, arranged seemingly unrelated motifs, and created a fantastical atmosphere, portraying the extraordinary lurking beneath the surface of everyday life. His paintings from the 1910s, later dubbed "metaphysical art," had a profound impact on artists such as Salvador Dalí and René Magritte, among others associated with Surrealism. After 1919, he became interested in traditional painting techniques and began to return to the style of classical painting. Concurrently, he continued to produce works based on the themes of his earlier metaphysical art, creating art until his death at the age of 90.

This exhibition divides de Chirico's approximately 70-year career into themes such as "Italian Squares," "Metaphysical Interiors," and "Mannequins," presenting his paintings from his early years to his late works in detail. Additionally, it showcases his sculptures and stage designs, making it the first large-scale retrospective exhibition of de Chirico's work in Japan in a decade. It offers a rare opportunity to explore the entirety of de Chirico's art and appreciate his unique expression.
