Collection Exhibition ”Departure to the New Day”

BB Plaza Museum of Art
Finished
The BB Plaza Art Museum, which opened in Kobe in 2009, will celebrate its 15th anniversary in July 2024. The collection comprises works from modern and contemporary Japanese and French artists. This time, in two separate exhibitions, we will introduce artists with connections to the Kansai region and French artists centered around the École de Paris.

In the first exhibition period, selected artists who have been active primarily in the Kansai region (Hyogo, Osaka, Kyoto) will be showcased, presenting a diverse array of works ranging from Western-style paintings to Japanese paintings, sculptures, and ceramic art. Please enjoy the journey of these artists who have crossed paths and interacted on the stage of Kansai, including Ryohei Koiso, one of the representative painters of Hyogo, Shigeru Izumi and Yoshikazu Yamanaka who were active in the Democratic Artists Association formed in Osaka, and Tozan Miyanaga, born in Kyoto, who explored avant-garde ceramic art.

In the second period, the exhibition will introduce artists such as Marie Laurencin and Marc Chagall, who are known as part of the École de Paris (the Paris School) and have left their mark on an era in Paris. While they did not adhere to specific ideologies or styles, they shared a commitment to pursuing their style and pouring their hearts into their work. Through their works, including those of Fauvism's Maurice de Vlaminck and André Derain, as well as Salvador Dalí who interacted with Pablo Picasso and others in Paris, we will trace the currents of beauty born from the 19th to the 20th century and the stories behind them.

Just as the artists have transcended national and temporal boundaries, it is hoped that the museum will continue to develop with an ever-expanding perspective. We envision this exhibition as a new step toward the future of the BB Plaza Art Museum rooted in the local community.
