Veronica Ditting et al.
The exhibition at ddd brings together works by Veronica Ditting from over the last two decades including books, magazines, publications, exhibition design and various other printed delights. The display emphasises the materiality and three-dimensionality of the works through the use of custom-designed stands that are set at different heights and orientations in order to allow multiple vantage points on the work. Assembled in the gallery, they create a landscape of print that accentuates the fundamental characteristics of the Veronica’s collective output.

Among the major projects on show is The Gentlewoman magazine. As a member of the small team that launched the publication in 2010, Ditting invented and evolved its singular and highly influential sensibility. Focussing both on selected magazine layouts and on the much-loved reference sections of the magazine, the exhibition offers a particular insight into her editorial approach. Also on show are the host of publications that launched the beauty metier for Hermès. In the case of these pieces, the emphasis is on Ditting extended play on ratios that relate to the dimensions of the beauty products themselves and her use of color. These projects sit alongside artists’ books, editorial and exhibition design that underlie, among other things, Ditting's unique relationship with imagery and image makers. In parallel to the display of finished works, there is a set of large-scale images by the photographer Qiu Yang of material including models, dummies, proofs and design sketches. Intricately composed and beautifully lit, these photographs create a sense of the design process behind the pieces on display and also of the scope and scale of the archive. They also speak to the commissioning of images, which is a pivotal aspect of Ditting's work as an creative director.

The exhibition captions give detailed information regarding the materiality and processes behind each project, and, as such, are intended to encourage the appreciation of graphic design in three dimensions. That said, first and foremost the display encourages an immediate and sensual response to the work. Above all, it is a celebration of the potential of print.
