Celebrating the 1150th Anniversary of the Founding of Daigoji Temple and its National Treasures

Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka
Finished
Located in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto, Daigo-ji Temple was founded in 874 during the early Heian period by Rigen Daishi Shobo. Since then, it has served as a central temple of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism, attracting the faith of successive emperors, court nobles, and samurai, and playing a significant role in history. Daigo-ji comprises two temple complexes: the upper complex (Kamidaigo) on Mount Daigo and the lower complex (Shimodaigo) at the mountain's base. As a mountain temple, Daigo-ji has been a place for various prayers, such as for national peace and rain, and since the early Edo period, it has also developed as a center for Shugendo practices.

This exhibition introduces Daigo-ji through three main chapters: "The Mountain Temple Daigo-ji," "The Center of Esoteric Buddhist Rituals," and "The Bearer of Momoyama Culture." Additionally, special sections highlight the temple’s distinctive features, including "The Inheritance of Secret Rituals," "The Mysterious Forms of Esoteric Buddhist Implements," "The Temple of Shugendo," "The Spirit of Integrated Study of Exoteric and Esoteric Teachings Inherited from Shobo," and "Modern and Contemporary Art at Daigo-ji." The exhibition will feature around 90 treasures from Daigo-ji, including 14 National Treasures and 47 Important Cultural Properties, displayed on a large scale in Osaka for the first time. Among these treasures are items related to the cherry blossoms beloved by Hideyoshi Toyotomi and his wife, Kita no Mandokoro, offering a rare opportunity to appreciate the temple's rich history and art.
