Art of the Gods - Izumo Shrine Statues and Treasures

Matsue History Museum
Finished
Before the introduction of Buddhism to Japan, people did not depict specific images of gods, believing instead that gods resided in elements like the sea, mountains, rocks, and trees. However, as Buddhism spread from the continent and people encountered Buddhist statues, they eventually began to represent the forms of gods. These representations became known as "shintai," or divine embodiments. At the same time, Japanese people believed that Buddhas appeared as gods to save humanity, and thus, Buddhist statues were revered and worshipped alongside shintai. Additionally, the Japanese believed that gods lived lives similar to ours in terms of clothing, food, and shelter, and they crafted and dedicated items such as garments and cosmetic tools to the gods for their daily lives. These offerings are known as "shinpo" or divine treasures.

This exhibition showcases shintai, Buddhist statues, and divine treasures preserved in the shrines and temples of Izumo, reflecting on the thoughts and beliefs of the people of Izumo towards their gods.
