The Whereabouts of the Real—Contemporary Artists: To Live, To Depict

Takaoka Art Museum
Finished
Realism in the sense of detailed expression has been attracting renewed attention in recent years. In Japan’s Meiji period (1868-1912), Realism imported from the West coexisted with a uniquely Japanese style of its expression. This exhibition examines the genealogy of Japanese Realism, which remains alive today. The displays will explore the future of Realism in contemporary art, beginning with the “iki-ningyo” (living dolls) of artists such as Kisaburo Matsumoto that gained popularity as sideshow attractions.
