As Japan modernized during the Meiji period (1868-1912), it embraced Western-derived realistic expression in earnest. On the other hand, as seen in Buddhist statues of the Kamakura period and free-standing figurines of the Edo period, Japan originally had its unique form of realism, and after the Meiji period, these two forms of "realism" of different origins became mixed together. As a result, Yuichi Takahashi's unique realistic paintings, which emphasized partial depiction, were born, and in sculpture, Koun Takamura and Denchu Hirakushi challenged traditional sculpture with Western forms and exquisite expression. This lineage has been passed down through the generations to contemporary artists.

This exhibition explores how these expressions of realism have been inherited and reconsidered through the paintings and sculptures of 17 contemporary artists, including oil paintings by Yuichi Takahashi and live dolls by Kisaburo Matsumoto and others.
