Ken Nakazawa
Ken Nakazawa was born in Tokyo in 1970 and graduated from Tama Art University with a postgraduate degree in oil painting. His major exhibitions include “MOT Annual 1999: Modest Radicalism” (Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo) and “YOKOHAMA 2001: International Triennale of Contemporary Art” (Pacifico Yokohama). Nakazawa has won acclaim in Japan and internationally with installation works using visually insubstantial materials, such as wires and nylon filaments, to meld his works with the space of the venue.

In this exhibition, Nakazawa displays a new installation work entitled Lines. This work consists of 170 objects some 80cm tall randomly arranged in the entire gallery space. Each is composed of a 3mm-diameter steel rod. The upper half of Nakazawa’s characteristic U-shaped steel rod is painted white, its top portion bent in a right angle. Two steel rods about 20cm in length are welded to its feet to enable the object to stand independently. The bent top portion of the U-shaped rod forms a plane parallel to the floor, with result that the object obtains sculptural volume. Standing together in substantial number in the space, the objects appear like a herd or flock of some kind. Even if fundamentally the same shape, no two of the objects are identical. Each stands alone with an exquisite balance and sense of distance.
Using minimal material—a 3mm-steel rod, Ken Nakazawa has transformed the quality of the space simply with lines. The space with its myriad lines overlapping in complex ways is enveloped by silence. Nakazawa's work never forces or limits the viewer’s perception of meaning, because an interpretation must be allowed to form quietly in the depth of our mind. We invite you to enjoy this new work by Ken Nakazawa.
