Having largely focused on 19th century Western art since its opening, the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum in this exhibition takes a new departure in highlighting the Japanese art of ukiyo-e, reflecting the Edo spirit of a transient floating world through invocations of both reality and the realms of pleasure. These works enchanted not only the people of Edo, but also 19th century Europeans and Americans, and today we are fascinated anew by their lively and vivacious scenes. This exhibition features a full overview of ukiyo-e, straddling across the Edo period to the Meiji era, from its inception through to its final glory, presented in three separate display periods. Along with the display of masterpieces selected from the massive ukiyo-e collection assembled by Saitô Fumio, director of the Kawasaki Isago no Sato Museum, examples of modern Western prints in the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum’s collection, including those by Toulouse Lautrec and other artists influenced by ukiyo-e, will be displayed as part of the exhibition’s presentation of the fascination of ukiyo-e which spans time and space.
