Yoriyas (Yassine Alaoui Ismaili)
In 2020, Kyotographie inaugurated the Delta/Kyotographie Permanent Space within the Demachi Masugata Shopping Arcade, hosting artist-in-residence programs for young African contemporary artists. This year, the residency welcomes Moroccan artist Yassine Alaoui Ismaili (Yoriyas), who will create a work for the festival. Yoriyas gave up his career as a dancer in 2013 while traveling the world as a professional dancer due to a serious knee injury. This pivotal moment led him to delve into photography as a means of self-expression, expressing his physical artistry into visual storytelling. Yoriyas spent several weeks immersing himself in Kyoto in November 2023, capturing the people and the landscape along the Kamogawa River, the vibrancy of Kyoto’s youth on the streets, and the local community within the Demachi Masugata Shopping Arcade. The culmination of his work will be presented at Kyotographie 2024.
