Artists

Yang02, Nanae Mitobe
What are painting and drawing? In this exhibition, two artists with relative differences in expressive techniques and authorship will present works that cut across the surface of painting and drawing, transcend existing boundaries, and reconfigure the definition of the two while liberating their own expression from various gravitational forces such as economic rationality and formalism.

Yang02 has developed a drawing machine that updates the current trends of Dadaism and kinetic art and has produced numerous works that question the human body and the subjectivity of expression, including "graffiti," which is automatically drawn by a machine using spray cans, pens, and other materials. The works are often made from discarded urban materials. Many of his works are created by collecting waste materials from cities, and he has presented many multilayered works that include critical perspectives on the city, the structure of the art world, technology, people, and society.

Nanae Mitobe is an artist who paints three-dimensional paintings with an overwhelming sense of volume, applying oil paints in a one-dozen can by hand. In her signature series “Depth," she explores the essence of painting through highly abstract, anonymous portraits. Since last year, Mitobe has been an exchange student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria. While there, he conducted research on color and will exhibit new works created with a unique approach that is also informed by Goethe's chromatology.

Although sometimes regarded as an "unorthodox artist," Mitobe's works question the essence of painting and drawing while stepping into the context of art history, opening up new horizons in this exhibition.
