Kotobuki Shiriagari
While handling package design and advertising, Kotobuki Shiriagari has also debuted as a manga artist, producing works in various genres such as parodies of Shirato Sanpei's works, gag manga depicting the lives of salarymen, socially conscious 4-panel manga serialized in newspapers, and absurd manga. In 2018 and 2021, he gained attention for his interpretation of the world of Hokusai, a master of ukiyo-e in the Edo period, with parodies such as "A Slightly Funny Almost Thirty-Six Views" based on Hokusai's "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji" (circa 1830-32).
This exhibition will showcase Shiriagari's parody works of Hokusai created thus far. Additionally, the exhibition will present new works depicting the landscapes of Chiyoda Ward based on "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo" (1856) by Hiroshige Utagawa, held in the special research room of the Hibiya Library and Cultural Center. Through Kotobuki Shiriagari's depictions of modern artifacts and people experiencing time troubles overlaid on the landscapes of the Edo period depicted by the greatest rivals in ukiyo-e, Hokusai and Hiroshige, visitors can enjoy a chuckle while experiencing a time travel adventure at this exhibition.
