In Japan, cats started to appear in various paintings and ukiyo-e woodblock prints during the Edo period (1603-1868) when they became popular as pets among the common people. Present exhibition through the cat-themed works of ukiyo-e woodblock prints by cat lover Kuniyoshi Utagawa and others focuses on the history and habitual feline behavior, as well as the relationship between cats and humans, trying to show that cats are not just “cute” but to explore the profundity of the society that has cats in it. The exhibition introduces the charms of cats with a lot of cat love, including cat common things that cat lovers will find irresistible.
